Welcome

We as a community need to do more for parents and carers when they choose to re-enter the workforce. It is therefore with great pleasure that I welcome parents, carers and employers to ways2work.

Developed by the Victorian Government, this easy-to-use site contains straightforward things you need to know; links to other helpful sites and innovative, co-operative work life balance ideas that can benefit both employees and employers alike.
Parents and carers

For many of us, providing care and supporting family and friends will be the most important and consuming job we ever do. Its no surprise that making the decision to return to paid work after a period of time caring for others, no matter what the motivation, can seem overwhelming.

As the mother of two young children, I understand how challenging it can be dealing with the issues of providing care and obtaining work that meets your needs and the needs of your family and employers.

The ways2work website is designed to help support those looking to return to paid employment, by providing some great ideas and strategies and by demonstrating the many skills and abilities they will have developed through their caring role that make them highly sought after employees.

We hope the information as well as the success stories of other parents and carers in ways2work will make the process of returning to work a little easier.
Employers

Like those in many other economies, Victorian businesses are directly affected by the global shortage in skilled labour. This is despite significant numbers of people being capable, qualified and job ready, but outside the paid workforce.

A key challenge is to improve the capacity of businesses to capitalize on the skills and experience amongst those who have been out of the workforce for a period of time caring for others.

The ways2work website provides practical advice on how employers can gain a competitive edge by attracting carers back to work and providing them with a smooth transition that meets the needs of business and family.

The toolkit also has information on how to develop workable policies and procedures to make employers more attractive to parents and carers and thereby widen the pool of talented candidates available to support their business.

I hope you put the toolkit to good use!
