Some of you may be looking to enter the paid work force for the very first time. You might be feeling especially daunted. Read about the skills shortages below and take heart!

Want to start your own business?

Rather than working for someone else, you may be considering starting your own business. If that's the case, Business Victoria has a wealth of information and resources to help you. If you are a woman you might also like to visit Mums in Business to find out about one of the many business women's networking groups that exist.

The skills shortage

With 2.65 million workers, Victoria has Australia’s second-largest labour force. Over the last 10 years Victoria has experienced consistent employment growth and historically low levels of unemployment. While a weakening of the global economy is forecast to lead to a reduced demand for labour, many areas and occupations will continue to experience a shortage of skilled workers.

Industry is being encouraged by government to recruit and train workers to build a more skilled workforce. Meanwhile, employers need ready-skilled workers to fill vacancies. The job landscape is changing and that’s great news for you.

The types of positions available across the economy are always shifting. Jobs come and go all the time. For example, the manufacturing sector in Victoria is currently employing fewer workers, but there has been a significant job growth in health and community services.

What this means for you

You need to stay informed. Very few people stay in the one job for life and you’ll have the best chance of success if you’re willing to review your own skills, develop some new ones and explore the full range of employment options open to you.
