Nerves are OK
Expect to be nervous at your interview. You have an emotional investment in the outcome – you want to be successful and get the job – of course you’ll be nervous!
Actors say that a bit of nervousness actually helps them to perform better because it gets the adrenalin pumping. It’s such a normal reaction that employers expect it and make allowances for nerves when they assess candidates.
Working through your nerves
Here are some hints for putting your best foot forward under pressure:
- Research
Do as much background work as you can. Revise your application and your notes – it's all there. You’ve done everything you can to prepare, all you have left to do is your best. - Rehearse
Rehearse with a friend or family member beforehand. Imagine some of the Questions you might be asked and practice your answers. - Visualise your success
Imagine yourself at the interview being confident and coming across well. This is called positive visualisation and it's what top athletes and business people do. Keep saying to yourself 'I am going to do really well!' Imagine how good you will feel when you get the job. - Remember why you're there
Think of all the reasons why you decided to return to work. Revisit the Thinking about returning section and review your What's Important to Me profile. You know you can do this job. The interview is the time to clearly convey this message to the employer. - Slow down and feel good
Take a few deep breaths. Notice your feelings of anxiety and remind yourself it's OK to feel that way and that the other applicants will feel nervous too. Slow down your speech. This will help you relax. Smile to yourself, stand tall, back straight and channel your nervous energy into a positive attitude towards the job. Try to see the interview as an opportunity to really sell yourself. - Look the part
You’ll feel good if you’ve taken extra care with your appearance and your clothes are clean and neat.
