After the interview

If you haven't heard from the employer within the time they told you they would be making a decision, call them to find out what's happening.

This is perfectly acceptable practice, so don't feel like you're being pushy. Employers know that you may have other job offers and you need to be able to organise your life.

If you haven't been successful, ask for some feedback on your interview and application.

Learning more about your strengths and weaknesses will help you do better next time.

Unfortunately job hunting can be a long and frustrating process. It is important to try and keep up your morale.

Persistence

Being unsuccessful in job interviews can be demoralising. Denis Baker, 'Dr Work' columnist and author of The Personal Job-Hunting Package, has the following advice:

'"You never give up, for that is the time and place the tide will turn." This saying hangs on my office wall.

The more you keep trying the more likely something will eventually come your way.

My dad told me as a kid, it was like fishing, if you don't keep your line in the water you will catch nothing. So when you fish and you cop a whole lot of snags and lost bait and lost hooks, that is the time you should be throwing your line back into the water – try some different spots, different rigging on your line, different bait. The same so much applies to job hunting.'
