Monash University

Monash University signA flexible approach helps a leading university to compete

Monash University is known internationally for the quality of its education and research. It would also like to be well known for its flexible work arrangements. Monash has 5,440 full-time, 1,800 part-time, 2,000 casual and 2,100 sessional employees.

Since adopting a Work Life Strategy in 2001 employees have access to a wide range of flexible working arrangements, including:

  • Pre-natal, Parental and adoption leave
  • Parenting and child care support
  • Online information for carers
  • Work from home
  • Unpaid ‘career break’ leave
  • Option to reduce hours in transition to retirement without affecting superannuation

In staff surveys, Monash University has also found that flexibility is one of the top three reasons why people decided to join the Monash University workforce.

“Without question, I’m enjoying life more than I have for some time. Working part-time allows me to make the transition to retirement on my own terms. I’m sure that I would have been forced to retire earlier than I wanted to if this option hadn’t been available to me.” (Monash employee)
