What does work life balance mean?
Work life balance refers to achieving a balance between all of the aspects in an individual’s life including work, family, friends, health, relaxation, community activities and socialisation. For instance, a work–life strategy could include access to quit smoking activities in work time, or paid time off work to donate blood. Where can I find out more information about improving the balance between family and work in my workplace?
The Work and Family Balance Manual (PDF 70kb) – better practices for better business includes information on relevant legislation, examples of strategies and policies, as well as a step-by-step guide to implementation. Examples of clauses that have been written to be easily adapted to suit the needs of individual workplaces are also included, as well as practical examples of how other organisations have implemented better work and family balance strategies.

How do I know if there’s a skills shortage in my industry?
You’ll find more information in Skills needed in your region. There is a national strategy for addressing the skills shortage at www.getatrade.gov.au. The JobGuide identifies where there is a current need for skilled or qualified workers across different industries, organised by states and territories.
